Inner Mongolia, not to be confused with Mongolia, is the 3rd largest province in China. Located in the north of the country, it marks the border with Mongolia. Whether you work, study or visit China, do not hesitate to visit this autonomous province.

Inland Inner Mongolia

Steppes as far as the eye can see, rugged desert or sand, valleys and lunar landscapes, you will be served in terms of awe-inspiring views. Moreover, you will be touched by the kindness and hospitality of the natives: the Mongolians. The latter master Mandarin but have retained their local culture. They speak Mongolian and have the same traditions and religions as in Mongolia. Even if they are of Chinese nationality, they are very different from the Hans (majority ethnic group in China).

The climate is austere: freezing in winter and a good part of the year, except in the summer when some places in the Gobi desert can be scorching. The Mongolian cuisine is consistent i.e. mutton stew with vegetables, meat skewers or meat soups and potatoes.

They Will Be Happy To Drink With You

Even too much sometimes, because many want to invite you. The city is well located. From there, you can plan your itinerary on your own or with the help of a guide. The Hohhot Youth Hostel can help with that. It offers tours in the Gobi desert or in the meadows to meet with shepherds. There is even the possibility of sleeping in a yurt, the traditional habitat of nomadic Mongolians. But nothing prevents you from exploring for yourself if you have more time and if the language barrier does not scare you.

The area is so vast that there is plenty of choice for trekking: meadows (green summer or large arid regions of winter), valleys and rocky desert will amaze you. Camel rides are also fun, around Baotou or Erlianhot, near the Mongolian border. For the bravest and in search of unusual, you may go to Saihantalazhen. It is the penultimate city before the Mongolian border when coming by train from Hohhot. Take the train to Erlianhot and then a bus to Saihantalazhen.

Few Tourists Stop Here, But The Change Of Scenery Is Huge

Few tourists stop here, but the view is entire vast expanses of steppes in the vicinity, absolute silence, big blue sky by day and more than starry at night. The locals are incredibly generous. If you sympathize with them, they will not hesitate to offer you milk tea with Yach cheese. Yes, yes, to taste!

In this part of Inner Mongolia, you feel cut off from the world. I made beautiful meetings. Then, I even went to a camel festival in Saihantalazhen where many offered me a camel ride, discover local crafts or attend performances of Mongolian folk dances. However, I forgot even the icy wind and the -25 degrees of January. Subsequently, I was also invited to a Mongolian family.
